The City of Newark experienced double-digit reductions in crime in 2016 compared to 2015. There were 12 fewer homicides in 2106. The largest reductions were for robbery and burglary with a 23% and 22% drop respectively. Though there was an increase in aggravated assaults, the number of nonfatal shooting victims decreased by 22%. In 2015 there were 329 victims and in 2016 there were 257 victims. The nonfatal shooting numbers are captured in the robbery and aggravated assault numbers. Overall, the number of violent crimes dropped from 3,076 incidents in 2015 to 2,764 incidents in 2016, a 10.1% reduction. Property crime also decreased going from 7,486 incidents in 2015 to 6,475 incidents in 2016, a 13.5% reduction.
