The City of Newark experienced a slight increase in overall crime in 2017 compared to 2016; however, compared to 2015, the city experienced a 10% decrease in 2017. The most dramatic reductions were in murders and robberies. There were 69 murders citywide, down from 90 in 2016. Unfortunately, the largest increases were in aggravated assault and rape for the periods studied. Overall, property crimes have decreased since 2015; however, in 2017, all of the property crime categories except theft increased compared to 2016. Additionally, nonfatal shooting hits which are captured in the aggravated assault and robbery numbers increased significantly in 2017 compared to 2016. However, when compared to 2015 numbers, nonfatal shooting hits are relatively flat.
