Through the end of September, 2016, the city of Newark has experienced double digit reductions in overall crime. From January to September this year compared to the same time period last year, overall crime is down 15%. Violent crime (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) is down 9% going from 2,289 incidents in 2015 to 2,079 incidents in 2016. Property crime (burglary, theft from auto, theft, and auto theft) has experienced larger decreases going from 5,772 incidents in 2015 to 4,763 incidents this year; a 17% reduction. Included within the robbery and aggravated assault numbers are non-fatal shootings. Last year, through September 30, the city had 191 non-fatal shooting incidents. This year, the city experienced 154; a 19% decrease.
