From January 1, 2017 to February 28, 2017, murders in Newark are down 67% and robberies down 25%. Strangely, nonfatal shooting incidents, which are counted as either a robbery or aggravated assault, are up 139% this year going from 18 incidents in the same period of 2016 to 43 incidents in 2017. The City of Newark experienced an overall 5% increase in crime compared to the same time period in 2016, driven by the most frequent crimes, less serious crimes. Property crime has increased 6.9% overall and violent crime has increased 0.28% overall. For property crime, thefts have increased 36% this year and all other property crime types have increased slightly and rape and aggravated assault have also increased this year.
