While murder is down in Newark (21 fewer compared to this time last year), unfortunately shootings are higher. During the first six months of 2017, there were 126 nonfatal shooting hits the City of Newark, involving 144 shooting victims. There were an additional 14 nonfatal shooting victims who were shot in the course of a fatal shooting incident. Nonfatal shooting hits have increased 59% compared to the same period in 2016 and the number of victims has increased 52%.
Drug and personal disputes are the most common motives for the nonfatal shootings hits, which are also the most common motives for murder. It is important to note that while traditional gang disputes represent only 15.1% of the motives, gang members are often involved in these incidents. For instance, a Brick City Brim could have shot a Grape Street Crip for selling drugs in his territory, but the incident would be classified as a drug dispute even though it involved gang members.
Sixteen of the nonfatal shooting incidents involved multiple victims. A breakdown of these incidents by motive can be found below.
